linux:
jpburton at wave: [10:51] [~]> date -r 1017708708
date: 1017708708: No such file or directory

solaris:
jpburton at blade: [10:52] [~]> date -r 1017708708
date: illegal option -- r
usage:  date [-u] mmddHHMM[[cc]yy][.SS]
        date [-u] [+format]
        date -a [-]sss[.fff]

that seems to be a bsd option (very frustrating at times too!).. :(
