Thanks for the suggestion. The patches now have an implementation that
does it like this:

  AuthColumnDef n, attributename, type[, formatted]
For example:
  AuthColumnDef 1, Filter-Id, reply, formatted

Formatting is only done if it is requested for the column. Also, it
works for any type, not just for GENERIC.
