(RADIATOR) best way to upgrade radiator

what's the official/best way to upgrade radiator from quite old versions
(3.3) to more recent ones?

i say this because the originals are installed into the system hierarchy
(yuk!) ... and overwriting is not a consistent operation. in addition some
file locations have changed - eg radius.cfg is now expected/symlinked to
/etc/radiator ...

myself i prefer to install isolated instanced in /opt/instance1
/opt/instance2 .. etc and they don't wrote outside that top level directory
- but in this instance i will have to work with what i'm given.
