This may be your problem, I remember having this problem running MySQL
Server 4.1 and trying to talk to it from ColdFusion which only worked
w/ 4.0.

mysql> SET PASSWORD FOR
    -> 'some_user'@'some_host' = OLD_PASSWORD('newpwd');

This solved my problem.  Hope this helps.
